Call for Proposals
Upstairs at Spellerberg Projects
Spellerberg Projects is an artist-run gallery and studio space located at 103 S Main St in Lockhart, Texas. This small town, situated thirty miles southeast of Austin, is known for its barbecue and is increasingly recognized for its vibrant arts scene. The upstairs program space hosts concerts, screenings, workshops, and various events organized by artists, musicians, educators, and community members.
We’re interested in hearing from people with ideas for the space.
The space
The second floor features a flexible, open area above the gallery that accommodates about 24 seated guests or up to 50 standing. It includes a low stage, tables and chairs, drawing easels, and a projector and screen.
While we do have speakers available, we do not have a professional sound system. Musicians should plan to bring or arrange their own sound setup, and we are happy to assist with coordinating logistics.
The building offers street parking, but please note there is one flight of stairs (no elevator) and no kitchen facilities. Public transportation to Lockhart is limited.
Past events
To give you an idea of the variety of events we’ve hosted, Jana Horn and Knife in the Water performed to a full house on a Friday night. Bob Hoffnar and Max Lorenzen transformed the space into a sound installation where the audience moved through tuned sine waves. Faiza Kracheni led a hands-on 16mm film workshop through the Austin School of Film. Daniel Hill presented a pop-up photography exhibition featuring the Lockhart High School cross-country team. Marie Tobola hosts a recurring life drawing session.
Voxtrot filmed the video for the first single off their comeback album in our building and used the gallery for their promotional photos.
Some of these events were carefully produced. Others were someone with an idea and a date. We’re open to both.
How it works
For most events, we provide the space, and you manage your own revenue — whether through ticket sales, workshop fees, suggested donations, or free admission. If your event requires a different arrangement, we can discuss suitable terms.
We will promote your event via our website, social media, email newsletters, and event calendar listings. We do ask that you come prepared with an understanding of your audience and how you plan to reach them. As a small venue in a small town, the most successful events are those where the organizer has an existing community to draw from — whether that’s through a mailing list, social media following, local network, or word-of-mouth.
Workshop organizers cover their own materials and supply costs, though we’re happy to help think through budgeting.
Get in touch
If you have an idea, please reach out! A formal proposal is not necessary — just let us know what you want to do, when you’re thinking, and who it’s for. We’ll work together to figure out the details.
