Event • Friday, April 16, 2021

Spellerberg Projects, Masur Gallery
119 W San Antonio St, Lockhart TX
Organized by Mano Amiga

An exhibition of local teenagers’ poetry and artwork. Selected artists include Jonathan Carrillo, Jeyme Zavaleta, Daniela Sustaita, Jonathan Vasquez, Maribel Castruita, and Liliana Castruita. Several artists are members of Lockhart’s Voces de Resistencia collective.

This exhibition travels to us from the San Marcos Art Center. The title is a Spanish-language expression that refers to not allowing a situation to persist. This title reflects the young artists’ concerns about race, criminalization, and immigration.

The exhibition opened on April 15 with a festive event featuring literary performances and live music by Olivia Zane. Attendees to the opening received original postcards containing the young artists’ work pre-addressed to the Texas Historical Commission. These postcards support the effort to relocate Lockhart’s Confederate monument.

The opening reception was co-hosted by Caldwell County nonprofit Where We Thrive. The group announced their new Essentials Pantry, were household and hygienic items are offered for free to low-income residents. The pantry is located on the second floor of the Spellerberg Projects building at 103 S Main St.
