About the Artist
Hawu Juhye Lim (b. 1989, Seoul, South Korea) is a Korean-American artist whose practice centers on works on paper. Growing up in suburban America as a 1.5 generation undocumented immigrant, Lim prioritized day to day survival over emotional wellness. When she finally came to be on her own to continue her study, she discovered a deep well of overlooked hearts from her past, accumulated during the struggle for survival. These emotions – anxiety, ungroundedness, depression, and a flicker of hope among others– became a reservoir within her. Lim’s work translates this pool of emotions into potato-like lumps that embody surrender, a desperate attempt to appear human, and the constant struggle for stability. With these series of drawings, Lim studies her own limbo in the hopes to understand, love and, live even in this Absurd world. Lim earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in and continues to hone her practice in Brooklyn, New York.
